A Day Lost

A Day Lost

Well, well, well. My perfectly premeditated plan has already been busted! And not because I didn’t follow the plan…I just lost a day!!

On Day 1 of SOL, I laid out my writing plan with weekly topics or styles to help guide my writing. Monday is mantra day when I write using inspiration from a quote/saying/comment/etc. Tuesday is tip Tuesday when I share a piece of advice that I picked up somewhere. I apparently decided to make those one in the same on Monday…I even titled Monday’s post Tip Tuesday!! *face palm*

The good news is that the post worked for both Monday and Tuesday; my tip came from a quote shared on a podcast. I saw my mistake when I reviewed my agenda last night and realized it was Tuesday evening, and I had already posted a “freebie Wednesday” earlier that day. The other good news is that this reflection post counts as a freebie Wednesday, too…and look at that, it’s Wednesday! The plan resumes.

The even better news from this mishap is the reminder to myself that I make mistakes. Did I give thought to my SOL plan? Yes. Did I brainstorm topics and styles, select the top contenders, and then arrange them on the day of the week that fit the energy of the day or even the alliteration of the day? Yes and yes and yes. Did I already mess it up? Yes. Is the SOL challenge ruined? NO. Did the sun still rise this morning. YES. I give myself grace for the incredibly busy week I’ve had (more on that to come!) and I know that YES I can still show up and NO it absolutely never needs to be perfect.

I love a good plan! As a newbie, I feel like I could use a little structure like yours. You got this!

    Megan,

This is such an important lesson in going w/ the flow for all writers. It’s the kind of experience I loved sharing w/ students so they understand how messy writing can be. And that little diversion from your plan resulted in an excellent slice.

Welcome to the musing millennial! I hope you enjoy my early 2000s nostalgia, my unfounded weather predictions, and my thoughts on life as a 30 something old English teacher.

This March I am participating in the Slice of Life Challenge from Two Writing Teachers.

I see students hunched over their desks, papers askew as they sort through their resources. I hear the tip tap tip tap of pencils moving independently of one another. Despite the discoordination, it is a harmonious music I miss. In my effort to encourage authentic work, they are handwriting their multi-paragraph writing responses. I feel…
